The project of building the Rhodes Sorting Centre of recyclable materials was included in the Operational Programme "Environment & Sustainable Development 2007-2013" in November 2011, with the Municipality of Rhodes as the implementing body. It was completed in January 2017, and the official inauguration took place in February 2018.
The Sorting Centre was built at the landfill site of Northern Rhodes, having a surface area of 7 hectares, and it can manage recyclable materials collected via sorting at the source, in recycling bins. It includes a 1,250m2 metal building, a prefabricated building which includes offices and staff areas, special building and electromechanical facilities, configuration of the surrounding space, as well as the required fixed and mobile equipment to ensure proper operation (press, separator, electromagnet, weighing machine, pre-selection and sorting cabins, ventilation system, hoist, skid steer loader etc.) The project is very important, as it greatly contributes to utilisation of the materials being recycled. These materials (paper, plastic, aluminium cans, ferrous metals, glass, etc.) are directed to the Sorting Centre after being separated from the waste headed to the landfill to be buried. The design allows for the management of 47.8 tonnes of presorted waste daily, and its capacity reaches 12,428 tonnes per year. In addition to Rhodes, it is expected to serve nearby islands.
Benefits: Protection of the environment.
